Her career has been defined by service, innovation, and a steadfast commitment to equity—traits that became even more visible after she earned the prestigious Shell Urban Science Educator Development Award in 2015. That recognition was a true springboard for her leadership aspirations, empowering her to amplify her voice, broaden her impact, and pursue opportunities that ultimately shaped her journey to becoming President of the National Science Teaching Association.

From classroom teacher to curriculum specialist, principal, district administrator, and national leader, Dr. Conerly has consistently elevated science education for all students. Her groundbreaking role as the first African American administrator at Monticello Elementary, her success in securing major STEM and literacy grants, and her influential work on multiple NSTA committees reflect both her vision and her courage to lead. Today, as she concludes her term as NSTA President, Dr. Conerly stands as a testament to how one educator’s dedication—strengthened by early recognition and opportunity—can transform classrooms, communities, and the national landscape of science teaching.
